Hereditary Genius
129
Witt, De, John. The younger brother of two of the ablest and more honourable of
Dutch statesmen. They were inseparable in their careers, but different in
character; each, however, being among the finest specimens of his peculiar

and aspiring character. He rose through various offices, until, aet. 27, he
became Grand Pensionary, virtually the chief magistrate, of Holland. He was
savagely murdered, aet. 47.

savagely murdered, aet. 49.
